Considering braces? You've come to the right place! We know that getting braces can seem overwhelming, so we’ve compiled the most important information to guide you through the process. Whether you’re a parent or a patient, you’ll find answers to the most common questions right here.
types of braces
Metal Braces: Durable and effective for all types of cases. Dr. John uses the Damon Ultima System, which is the most advanced system on the market. It offers precise control and gentle force, resulting in faster, more comfortable treatment for my patients. It gives him the most control for the most predictable and spectacular results. There are 2 different types of systems.
- Twin: Twin braces are the older traditional bracket system that uses O-ties (color bands) to hold the wire in place, allowing for fun customization but requiring more appointments. However, the extra bands and ties can make brushing and flossing more challenging, so careful oral hygiene is essential.
- Passive Self-Ligating (like pictured above with Damon Ultima): Passive self-ligating braces use a door to secure the wire, reducing friction and eliminating the need for O-ties or color bands. This design makes it easier to maintain good oral hygiene, as there are fewer areas where plaque can accumulate. Additionally, passive self-ligating braces promote better aesthetics by allowing for a broader, more natural smile as the teeth are moved more efficiently and with less friction. This is Dr. John's preferred bracket design.
how long will i need to wear braces?
- Treatment duration varies, typically lasting from 12 to 36 months, depending on individual needs.
- 12 months: Young children who need early treatment (Phase 1) typically need 12 months to create room for the adult teeth to come in.
- 18 months: The average time for a simple case, like an adult who didn't wear their retainers and are now wanting their perfect smile again.
- 24 months: The average time for most cases.
- 36 months: People who have "Impacted Canines", or those with more complex crowding need additional time.
- Regular adjustments are made every 8 weeks to guide teeth into their new positions.
what to expect during treatment
- Initial Consultation: An examination, discussion of goals, and 3D imaging (if necessary) to assess treatment options.
- Bonding Appointment: Applying brackets and wires is a straightforward and comfortable process. We start by drying your teeth to ensure a strong bond, then carefully placing a bracket on each tooth using a special adhesive. Once the brackets are set, we connect them with a wire that begins the gentle movement of your teeth. The entire appointment takes about 1.5 hours, during which we’ll also review important Do’s and Don’ts for braces care. You’ll feel no discomfort during the procedure, though mild soreness typically begins about four hours afterward and lasts for approximately three days.
- Adjustments: Periodic adjustments are done approximately every 2 months to get slightly larger wires. This is to keep the teeth moving into the correct position.
- Final Retainers: After your braces are removed, retainers are essential to keep your teeth in their new positions. We offer several types of retainers, which are worn both day and night for the first three months, then only at night thereafter. Consistently wearing your retainer is the only way to ensure that your teeth remain beautifully aligned.
